Vernetta Lucile Schmidt, the daughter of William and Augusta (Hoffmeyer) Schmidt, was born November 21, 1918 on a farm in Lake Belt Township, Martin County, Minnesota. She received her education in the Ceylon area. After her schooling, Vernetta worked at Querna and Kelling’s Grocery in Ceylon. She also helped care for both sets of her grandparents. On June 6, 1941 she was united in marriage to John Everett Hybbert in Eitzen, Minnesota. After their marriage, they lived and farmed in Lake Fremont Township. In 1964, they moved to Brooklyn Center, Minnesota where Everett worked for the University of Minnesota in the Agronomy Department. In 1982, they moved to Ceylon.
Vernetta was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Dunnell and a former member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Ceylon and Hope Lutheran Church in Brooklyn Center, Mn. She and Everett enjoyed their family and their motor home, spending winters in California, Arizona, Texas and Florida. Vernetta greatly enjoyed her flowers (especially her irises), gardening and working in her yard until she was 89. She also loved to bake and would be sure to make each family member’s “favorite” bar.
